
Course 2: Caring for Perinatal People with Substance Use Disorders
Course Overview
This course focuses on the compassionate care of perinatal persons with substance use disorders. Our subject matter expert addresses the unique challenges and health implications these individuals face and brings a heightened understanding to some of the psychological and physiological barriers of these disorders. We offer valuable insights, evidence-based strategies and demonstrate how healthcare professionals can play a pivotal role in fostering healthy outcomes for the substance exposed dyad, through informed and empathetic care.
Course Objectives
Identify the unique health challenges and implications faced by perinatal persons with substance use disorders.
Understand the psychological and physiological barriers that individuals with substance use disorders may encounter during pregnancy and postpartum.
Implement evidence-based strategies to provide compassionate and supportive care for perinatal persons with substance use disorders.

Faculty
Kaylin Klie, MD, MA, FASAM Dr Kaylin Klie is a family medicine and addiction medicine physician at the University of Colorado and Denver Health. Her clinical focus is perinatal addiction which includes the care of families impacted by substance use. Dr Klie enjoys teaching students, residents, fellows, and the community about caring for people with substance use conditions. She is the program director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She serves on various local, regional, and national committees dedicated to serving pregnant and parenting people with substance use.
