Therapeutic Reconciliation

Therapeutic Reconciliation

Course Overview

This course explores the concept of Therapeutic Reconciliation as a framework for breaking the negative feedback loop that often exists between first responders and patients with substance use disorders. Designed for all branches of prehospital providers, the course emphasizes harm reduction principles—such as leave-behind naloxone programs—and provides a deeper understanding of addiction as a chronic, treatable condition. Participants will also hear directly from individuals with lived experience, offering critical insight into patient perspectives and fostering more compassionate, effective care.

Course Objectives

  • Identify and analyze the underlying causes of negative feedback loops between first responders and patients with substance use disorders.

  • Apply harm reduction strategies, including leave-behind naloxone programs, to improve patient outcomes and provider-patient relationships in prehospital settings.

  • Integrate perspectives from individuals with lived experience to foster empathy, reduce stigma, and enhance the delivery of compassionate, evidence-based care.
