Course Overview

This course aims to dispel common myths about accidental fentanyl exposure by examining pharmacokinetic evidence and the science behind how fentanyl is absorbed. It also explores how media, institutional practices, and cultural narratives fuel fear and misinformation. This course provides clear, evidence-based guidance to support safer, more informed responses to the opioid crisis.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the pharmacokinetics of fentanyl and explain why incidental skin or airborne exposure is highly unlikely to result in overdose.

  • Identify and debunk common myths about accidental fentanyl exposure, particularly among first responders.

  • Interpret scientific evidence that clarifies the actual risks of fentanyl exposure via various routes (dermal, inhalation, etc.).

  • Analyze how media, institutional practices, and cultural narratives contribute to the fear and misinformation surrounding fentanyl exposure.
