Objectives
Analyze the unique challenges and characteristics of addiction in rural communities, including the social, economic, and healthcare-related factors that contribute to substance use disorders.
Examine addiction as a chronic, treatable disease, and identify differences between types of treatment and recovery services.
Explore medication treatments for opioid and other substance use disorders and determine the appropriate level of care based on patient-centered factors.
Evaluate provided treatment and recovery resources to integrate into future staff education.

Steve Carleton (he/him/his)
Steve Carleton is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Addiction Specialist. He has been practicing in the field of substance use, trauma, and mental health since 2007. Steve is the Chief Clinical Officer of Front Range Clinic/Porch Light Health and a professor at the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work. Additionally, he is an individual therapist, spokesperson, leadership facilitator, and expert witness. He also provided 10 years of service for the Department of Veterans Affairs and was the former Chief Clinical Officer for Gallus Detox, a cutting-edge medical drug and alcohol detox facility.
Amanda Johnson (she/her/hers)
Amanda Johnson is a Peer Recovery Coach, trainer, and entrepreneur. She is the founder of Watercolor Recovery and Tranquility & Co. She has lived experience and sustained recovery. She is known in the recovery community for her work providing outpatient care for uninsured or underinsured individuals as well as her work with at-risk youth and their families.
