Course Overview

Learn the basics of providing addiction care and how to do so effectively within the constraints of a rural ecosystem, utilizing a referral network, peers and tele-health services while following evidence-based guidelines.

Course Objectives

  1. Analyze the unique challenges and characteristics of addiction in rural communities, including the social, economic, and healthcare-related factors that contribute to substance use disorders.

  2. Examine addiction as a chronic, treatable disease, and identify differences between types of treatment and recovery services.

  3. Explore medication treatments for opioid and other substance use disorders and determine the appropriate level of care based on patient-centered factors.

  4. Evaluate provided treatment and recovery resources to integrate into future staff education.

Kaylin Klie, MD, MA, FASAM(she/her/hers)

Dr. Kaylin Klie is a family medicine and addiction medicine physician at the University of Colorado and Denver Health. Her clinical focus is perinatal addiction which includes the care of families impacted by substance use. Dr. Klie enjoys teaching students, residents, fellows, and the community about caring for people with substance use conditions. She is the program director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She serves on various local, regional, and national committees dedicated to serving and improving care for people with substance use.
